What do you look for in a bass player?
This question was originally fashioned for Jim, but I'm just as interested in hearing everyone else's response.
I'm a bass player who moved into guitar, and I wonder, as guitar players, what you look for in a bass player, and how what you "need" from the bass player changes depending on the size of the group? And also how this changes depending on the level of improvisation the group is pursuing.
And by extension what do you look for in a drummer? Or a keyboard player?
This question comes, rather paradoxically, from listening to a drummer, Jay Bellerose, who gives me (just as a listener) crucial information I didn't know I needed, if that makes sense.
