Amp choice for out of town gigs
Hi Jim,
You’re association with Fender Princeton Reverb is widely known although I’ve read you do use others such as a Vibrolux Reverb from time to time.
I was wondering what do you do for out of town gigs? For example, you’ve recently been to Japan and a few gigs in Canada? I don’t expect you brought a Princeton with you. Does your rider require a Princeton? Do you have a second choice or do you just use whatever backline is provided?
I guess a follow on question would be how much of your sound is tied to the Tele/Princeton combo or do you think you can get “your sound” through your Tele and any reasonably clean amp?
I look forward to your response
Regards
Warren

I've used Fender amplification since 1975 and in terms of backline, I don't really have second choice. Fender amps are part of my sound although I recently played a Gibson 225 through a small Carr amp and sounded pretty much like me. I've been playing guitar faithfully for 40 years so variables become less important. I've noticed this with Adam Levy and Steve Cardenas too -they always sound just like themselves no matter what they play through... Hopefully, in my case, that's a good thing! ha ha!
But I prefer Fender amps. I like and use the Fender Vibro-Champ, Princeton Reverbs with an assortment of speakers ( http://jimcampilongo.com/about/gear.php ), Deluxe Reverbs, Vibrolux Reverbs and Twin Reverbs.
Usually touring backline is a small menu limited to rental companies who carry Marshall, Vox AC-30's and hopefully Fender.
In the UK, Vox AC-30 and Marshall are usually the standard and Fender is the oddity. In the UK, when I toured with Martha Wainwright I'd request Silverface Twin Reverbs simply because they MIGHT have them. Martha generously supplied me with two 60's Twin reverbs. One was a back up.
In Japan I requested two Princeton Reverb Reissues. One was a back up.
Since we drove to Canada - I brought my own 60's SF Princeton Reverb and 60's SF Deluxe Reverb. To my own small surprise, the Princeton was plenty loud for 2600 capacity venues so I never used the Deluxe.
All the best - Jim
