I recently discovered some really interesting videos of a teacher named Hal Galper. His concepts on performance are really inspiring. There's tons of them so it'll take a while to digest them all.
This is the first one I saw and wow, really interesting...

This one made a huge impact on me. I used to be a slave to my notebook. I truly believed I couldn't get thru the songs with out it. Turns out I actually play much better when I'm not staring at a book. And I had played so many gigs with my notebook in front of me that I had internalized the songs without realizing it.
I find I get the most out of workshops and videos from non-guitarists. I tend to listen to what they're actually saying instead of trying to put it in context of a guitar. I also learnt the most valuable lesson ever at a workshop with a jazz bass player I really admired. I was a stupid student and started a discussion with him that quickly devolved into him rolling his eyes and giving me that "look." Ha! I felt 2 inches tall! But I learnt I should never act cool to impress real musicians...
Some people have that gift to switch you on when they explain something. Hal certainly seems to. It inspires you to get stuck in. Anyway I'm off to practice.
