Injury

edited March 2013 in General
Anyone have any injuries that prevented you from playing? I broke my ankle 10 days ago and had surgery to put two plates in on wed. I have to keep it elevated above my heart so playing is out for the time being.

I imagine in a week the swelling will go down and I'll have lots of free time to pick up where I left off but I got pretty depressed today that I'm falling behind and forgetting all the cool tunes I was working on.

I'd love to hear from any experiences y'all have had. -Corey

  • Hey Corey
Sorry to hear about your situation. I know how it feels when you lose the ability/gift of being able to physically play an instrument.About two years ago i broke my left pinky finger pretty good. The injury made it really painful to play the guitar.I couldn't ring a chord out until about one year ago, but eventually it healed to where I could start playing again. In the end it still looks kinda funny and is quite a bit larger than the pinky on the right hand and it points a few degrees starboard, which is nothing compared to the left hand of the great Django. So hang in there! It will work out.And also remember that if you can't physically play your axe it's a good time to theory up, there's always some study work you can do.
    Cheers, Lectro
  • Hey lectro,
Thanks for sharing. The whole experience was funny bc I slipped on the ice while hustling green coffee beans out of my pickup truck.

I was daydreaming a little about this flatts and Scruggs tune I've been working up and some ideas I had for playing it when I slipped. As I tumbled all that went through my mind is "please not my hands or arms" over and over. My wish came true! And it is a large silver lining.

I'm sorry to hear about your finger. It's a scary thing for us all to deal with but at least it incentives taking good care of our bodies.

I'm hoping that once the pain subsides in my ankle I can start to play all the time, and with 6-7 weeks off of work I may get more time to play than I would have had while working normally.

Must say, the mental despair of being stuck in bed and unable to play is so much worse than the physical pain and surgery. Thanks for responding, it made me feel a lot better!!!!!!! -Corey
  • Hi Corey- Sorry to hear about you injury - but breaking my leg gave me the the time to learn Travis picking and hybrid picking... Don't be discouraged, it won't take but a week or two to get back.
  • Sorry to hear about your accident Corey. You could use the next week just listening to music. Maybe delve deep into some tunes and analyze what's going on? At least you won't have the TV on. I believe Jimmy Bryant learned a lot listening to Django while convalescing in the hospital. I hope you recover quickly and get back to playing.
  • Thanks everyone! Today was a good day, my spirits where up and I'm thinking by tm I'll get to start playing again.

Adam, luckily my dad has never had tv so I've always had to be creative w free time. I can cheat w my phone tho.

Many of my friends have been really kind and bringing me new things to listen to as I heal.

My old guitar teacher mailed me a sun ra solo piano album which I've been loving all day. I highly recommend it!!

I downloaded bill frisells new solo album silent comedy. His most avant grade album in a long time. Electro harmonix new pedals the freeze and super ego are all over it. Def an album that will appeal to mostly guiar nerds. If you like the line 6 dl4 it's good to listen to for ideas.

    Thanks again!
  • Hang in there Corey!

  • This won't keep a good man down for long, Corey.
  • I once had pretty bad tendonitis and couldn't play for a few months. My silver lining was that when I could play again, many things felt new to me and I approached some old things differently.

And believe me, when you can pick up that guitar again...what a great day that'll be.
  • I noticed that also about coming to the instrument after some time away. A fresh approach.Might have something to do with the mind continuing with the music learning process.
  • Thanks everyone!!! You've all made me feel a lot better. I was a little clumsy when I started playing again but have been at it all morning.

Some time off makes you appreciate playing a lot!! It's a little uncomfortable playing while sitting up in bed but totally worth it. And now I have the time to learn all the Jim hall licks I've been meaning to learn!!!
  • Been down this road, amigo. Totally shattered my right wrist about 25 years ago in a construction accident (I fell 20-plus feet). Three months in a cast and about 7 months of rehab/PT.

    Just keep after it.
