Ladies in Guitar.

edited April 2011 in General
As i was going through this great list of most influential guitar players, i don't think i came across any female artists, so i think it's long overdue to start a thread about ladies playing guitar :) i'll start off by posting a couple of my favourite ones and it would really be great if people joined in.

Here's St Vincent:

and Mary Halovrson

  • The most influential female guitarist in my opinion was the character "Jenny" in the movie "Forest Gump". Her stage name was "Bobbie Dylan" and she could really get down.
  • Love the thread... here's a good one I think ...
  • Shannon Wright writes beautiful songs where she comps herself with some cool fingerpicking. This video this a bit more aggressive, though:

Warpaint is an all-female band. They played at Coachella this year:

  • @JMH Great videos! I really like Shannon Wright, i've seen that video quite a few times myself. Thanks for the heads-up on Warpaint. Here's another classic
  • an another one, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, i talk about guitar, not the "godfather"...I don't sell stuff arrhhh!

ps: Alex, i really loved ST Vincent, thanks

  • Nice videos, everyone!

I forgot to add a couple. Here´s Kaki King, she can do some mind-boggling percussive acoustic playing where she slaps and pops the entire guitar. Nowadays she plays other instruments as well. This piece is more traditional:

And of course I need to bring up Erja Lyytinen from Finland who can play some mean slide guitar:

  • St. Vincent is the bees' knees!

Also, though her last couple have moved a bit away from guitar, Polly Jean Harvey is phenomenal, especially with John Parish and Jeremy Hogg playing slide...
  • @elreclusa I loved PJs new album, it sort of grew on me and now im totaly hooked.
  • It really is great. Polly never ceases to surprise and amaze me. Really liked the last PJ/JP record too...but Louse Point may be my 'desert island' record...
  • Emily Remler - Tenor Madness

  • My selections date me but who cares?

Joan Baez – Personally, I’ve always considered her more of an activist than a musician. Although I have great respect for her talent, particularly as an excellent finger picker, her voice drives me bats! Too much vibrato. If she were a man Dylan would have felt really threatened by her, as he seemed to be by Donovan.

Bonnie Raitt – With her sublime slide guitar and deeply soulful voice, she carries the torch for American blues. Also she was the first woman to be honored with a Fender Stratocaster signature model.

Emmylou Harris – Although eclipsed by her otherworldly voice (that should be categorized as its own musical instrument), she’s held down the groove with some of the finest: James Burton, Albert Lee, Buddy Miller, et al. She is a past president of the Country Music Association. Gibson makes an Emmylou Harris signature model and she has been honored with their ‘Best Player’ award several times. She also plays a mean telecaster.

Tracy Chapman – Cool tempos, great riffage and an uncompromising attitude. She’s wonderful.

JONI MITCHELL – It’s not really fair to mention her, as she was (the only woman) on Rolling Stones’ list but here are three videos that represent the arc of a great artist’s life.

Ingenue Joan Anderson, 1965. Not her own tune but what a performance. (The bass bugs me, though.) At around 50 seconds, check out the eyebrows of the man behind her after she sings, “It being summer, ‘took off my shirt”. Hah hah! Mesmerizing.

    With Jim Henson’s puppets, 1989

From ‘Painting With Words and Music’, 1998. (What a band!)

  • mimi fox is a really fantastic jazz player sort of in the emily remler vein. i saw her live in boston once playing solo, def. draws on lenny breau and joe pass style.

muriel anderson plays really well, and she uses harp guitar sometimes which is always interesting.

leona boyd plays classical. there is a great video online of her playing with chet atkins and lenny breau, def. worth investigating.

I have started listening to the Dum Dum Girls, who have great songs with touches of garage and twang:

All the musicians in the band are female. Lots of guitars drenched in tremolo and spring reverb!
  • I'm kinda in love with the newest Peggy Sue record...
  • Charro can play.
  • Wild Flag has a twin guitar attack.

Love the Jazzmaster, although I am saving up for a Johnny Marr Jaguar.
  • Here's one from a while back...

  • Puss n Boots!
