Pandora (and the Music Genome Project)

edited August 2011 in General
So I listen to Pandora a lot while at work and was curious as to how people feel about this and other such algorythms, such as the "listeners who purchased this also bought" feature on itunes.

This feature seems pretty novel, pretty exciting at first but I am a little tired of it. Guitar players usually suffer from the ailments of inbred listening, which is counterproductive since most of the guitar players we love draw from a variety of players (of all instruments). I think many of these recomendations promote one to stay within a comfort zone.

Also, some of the choices pandora makes are pretty robotic. For example, Jim Campilongo radio gave me tunes by Joe Bonomassa, Los Lonely Boys and... Joe Satriani. I do now know who is at the helm of pandora radio but those choices are pretty bland and looks as though it simply searches for other mostly instrumental guitar players.

I would prefer some hail mary stretches for reconmendations to hear something new. Secret doors between two artists as opposed to generic Albert King to SRV to Kenny Wayne Sheperd type super highways.

How do others feel about this? And its not all bad because as I wrote this Pandora gave me a Louis Armstrong tune on Animal Collective radio, thats they type radio I want.
