Where to begin: need advice about lessons

edited November 2014 in Root
Hi all,

I just joined the site. I'm a big fan of Jim's playing, and I'm interested in checking out some lessons.

I'd classify myself as maybe a low/mid intermediate-level player, and I'm wondering what a good "path" would be.

I was thinking maybe starting with Arpeggios as Exercises and then moving on to
Understanding Progressions and Voice Leading.

Would this be a good choice for a lower intermediate level player? Or, would it be advisable to start with something like say the Playing the Blues courses.

Stylistically, I'm into loads of different stuff, but tend to listen to more "jazzy" stuff (including old country-jazz, rockabilly, western swing) than blues. For blues, I'm definitely more of an old chess records fan than say a SRV or Clapton fan.

Thanks for any guidance you can offer. I'm open to suggestions other than what I mentioned as well.

  • Hi Jason -
I can't tell exactly what level you are, but I'd suggest "Playing the Blues and Nailing the Changes". If that's a bit challenging, go backwards to "Playing the Blues". I like both the lessons you mentioned, but I thought the ones I suggested are wee bit more fun for a starter lesson. Get you back wanting to be in the practice chair!
    Welcome to the forum!
    All the best- Jim

  • Thanks for the quick response Jim! I really appreciate it!

I'm looking forward to studying with you.
  • Just a quick note to let you know that I love the lesson! I have already decided that I will be getting B flat Blues Concepts to expand on this topic.

I would also like to get a song lesson to work on in the background. Are there any song lessons in particular that you would recommend?

Some I am looking at are: Fly Me To the Moon, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and All Blues.

Also, one quick question about the tab in Playing the Blues and Nailing the Changes. On the Rhythm tab for the exercises, on the second diagram first line, and second diagram second line, there is something in a circle and an arrow. I'm guessing this is an H to indicate hammer on. For instance, in the first row on that page, I'm guessing you have your finger laying across the third fret and then you are hammering on the second finger on the fourth fret, third string. Could you confirm if that is the case? Other than that one question, I found the tab very easy understand!
  • One other song possibility would be Cry Me a River. That is one of my favorite jazz songs of all time.

    So hard to choose. :-)
  • "...I'm guessing you have your finger laying across the third fret and then you are hammering on the second finger on the fourth fret, third string. Could you confirm if that is the case?..."

    Yes!
  • Thanks Jim.
