Best Mic for Princeton?

edited April 2015 in Root
Hello all!

Hope you are al well ans enjoying your guitar playing.

I'm wondering what are folks experiences with different mics on Princetons?

I have PRRI, the FSR with a Celestion Greenback. I find alright, still not got it sounding as good as I hear other Princetons sound.

But I am gonna start taking it to gigs and that's going to mean going through FOH speakers at some shows.

Does anyone have any thoughts on good mics, placements etc for live use on a Princeton?

Best wishes to you all,

Martin

Hi Martin, mic choice for guitar amps is fairly straight forward. Most sound techs would probably suggest the Shure SM57 or the Sennheiser e609(or one of the older sennheiser mics that the e609 is derived from). Recently when working with a pit band (as a sound tech) the sound designer used a Neuman TLM 170. It sounded great through the PA but costs as much as a custom shop guitar!

As for placement a general rule of thumb is to start with the mic halfway between the edge of the 'hub cap' and the edge of the cone. But experimentation with position is the only way you'll begin to understand the range of sounds available. If someone is mixing your sound it is likely they will have an opinion!!! Lol
  • I bought a Jolie modded Ribbon microphone that I really like. A little bit off the speaker dependent on the volume of the other musicians.
