  • Looks like someone scooped it up. I have the two-tone orange and white and love it. Although I seem to have developed an affliction for speaker swapping. I'm currently using a Celestion G10 Gold, which I really like a lot. It's a bit heavy for a 10" speaker but sounds really sweet.

I had one of the Campilongo orange ones, like in the auction, and I was never happy with it... mostly due to the fact it doesn't handle bass frequencies very well, and tends to fart out... tried a few different speakers, even did some mods like upgrading the power transformer and adding a filter cap to the power supply...

In the Princeton's defense, 2 things:

    1) I don't use it like Jim, cranked to 10 and controlling all the gain from the guitar. While I DO use my guitar's volume knob to control gain, I most often have the guitar cranked, so setting the PRRI on 10 wasn't working for me.

    2) I bought a Super-Sonic 22, which has a "normal" "vintage" channel, which is voiced ALOT like a Deluxe Reverb/Princeton.... it was close enough. The reverb isn't nearly as good tho, I really miss the reverb in the Princeton- it was heavenly! Haven't yet found it's equal.
  • I also have a Super-Sonic 22. I originally bought it thinking it might replace the Princeton. But as it stands, I don't want to get rid of either for all the reasons you mentioned. Because of the SS's burn channel, I don't often feel the need to crank my Princeton. If I crank the Princeton, I can manage the bass by turning it down. But for me the sweet spot of the Princeton is with the volume at 4-5 or below with the treble on 8, bass on 9, and reverb around 2.5. Just the prettiest clean tone I've ever heard.

And I agree: I don't find the SS's reverb sounds as nice, but it's still pretty good. Mine was quite noisy until I rotated the tank 180 degrees. Weird, but it worked out well.

"just the prettiest clean tone I've ever heard"

    100% AGREED!!

While I wouldn't say I regret selling it, I definitely would have kept it if I could have afforded to... but, more/different gear calls!!! I always keep my eye out for a used one, I might just buy another Princeton someday.

Have you ever tried the new 68 Custom Princeton? I haven't, but people do seem to like it.... it's more midd-forward, which I could see being better for dirt, but that stopped tone of a Blackface seems to be king when it comes to clean tones...

  • I haven't tried the 68 yet. Still haven't found one near me. I'd love to try it. I'm not sure I'd want the earlier breakup for a Princeton. But that may not matter at the volumes I would typically play it.
  • The custom '68 is a different beast that the regular reissue's. Speaking of reissue's have you guys seen the FSR sunburst model :)
