pick ups in Jim's signature model will they be available as "replacement sets"

edited March 2011 in General
hi ya Jim , and everyone else, i heard in your interview online with guitarist mag (i think) that you said you selected a warmer pickup for the sig model...... since many of us may not be able to afford the signature model as it stands ....and it sure sounds great from the clips i seen , but i saw the price was pretty steep , unless thats changed...... so for us working muso's with no trust funds.......would the pickups be available as a replacement set for us to pop in a tele....... cos i play jazz and that the warmer tele tone you ( Jim ) uses is incredible....it's "tone nivarna"

and if they NOT gonna be available ..what other options in the line of replacement pickups would Jim or anyone else recommend that someone uses to mod their tele for a warmer tone so as Jim said in the NAM interview to "not have that "punish the audience tele tone" heheheh i liked the way he put that ....

peace and light

    Hi Keira,

Jim went through many differant sets of pickups and he chose the warmest set per his taste. Pickup preferance, in my humble opinion, is very subjective. There are a number of great pickup manufacturers out there that should have pickups you will enjoy. Thanks so much for the Inquiry. All the best.

  • I second Keira's notion. For those of us that won't be getting a Jim-tele, being able to buy pick-up set would be most sweet. I would love to know the tech specs of those pick-ups too.
  • I bet the the pickups won't be available separately.

But I'd love to hear Jim's view on some other Fender pickups. or Alnico III vs Alnico V and all that. Not that it makes me any better as a player...

Or how were the 59 rewound by SD? Alnico V...? how high is the output?

Hi - I thought I answered this, sorry for the delay...
No, the Campilongo Tele parts, hardware won't be sold from Fender separately.
Personally, to me ... trying to describe pick ups is like trying to describe the flavor of a steak ;V) ... But maybe Bernie, John, Armin can pipe in... Here are the stats and some pick up comments from Campy owners that might be informative ...

From the MUSIC ZOO ebay auction ...

    White Blonde Finish
    Lightweight Ash Body

    Nitrocellulose Lacquer Neck Finish
    21 Medium Jumbo Frets
Custom Wound Single COil Tele Pickups
Master Volume, Master Tone with an Exclusive Foil Capacitor

    Fender®/Gotoh® Vintage Style Machine Heads

    Vintage Nickel Hardware

It's a great guitar, Jim! I played it at a band practice last night (2 guitars, drums, bass, and saxophone) and got compliments all around on the sound and the look of the guitar. Played it though a BFPR on 5-6 (small basement) and controlled volume from the guitar. Gotta say it was beefier than my other Tele (can't say why, too many differences), the volume and tone pots have a very nice taper with lots of difference from 1-10 on both. It's going to be a fun process exploring what's "in there." The oddest thing of all - seeing both the volume and tone pots cranked full on, and hearing bridge pickup putting out a very powerful, cutting, full, and articulate tone, with no "icepick."

    Bridge pup =7.0k
    Neck pup =7.6k
    Cap = .047 PIO

I don't know how they did it, but as stated before, there is no icepick in the last 10% of the tone pot's travel. It's amazing. "Conventional Internet wisdom" would imply that a 7k bridge pickup in a Tele would deliver some icepick, so there's something else in this mix that is making that is mellowing that pickup out.

  • I`m new to the forum and i thought i`d chime in on the sunject of the signature pick ups ...of course, they wont be available seperately but i believe ive found a very good Campy in a pick up(s) solution in the form of BARE KNUCKLES BLACKGUARD 55 STAGGER set. Ive been trying to nail the Campy tone for a few years and even loaded in my Squier cv tele through a Super Champ xd, these dead on nail Jims tone to my ears on all settings. Anyone on a tone quest should check out these amazing p/ups
  • Thanks for the input diesel32, and welcome to the forum :)

  • just want to add I have no affiliation with the company but I have a non-Fender tele with Lollar pick ups and I am very happy with them. I think they are the "Lollar Special T" series. But I would recommend any pick up made by Lollar. not saying it sounds identical to Jim, I think there are a lot of parts to that equation...they make great pickups though. here is their tele page-

  • Hi

I have a set of Joe Barden (Danny Gatton sig) in my CS Nocaster. They are really nice and can get anywhere from beefy to classic Tele to a god "muted" jazz sound.

They are pretty sensitive, so all my flaws get to see the light of day. Im sure with the right amount of "talent" they will be darn amazing.

Oh and that awful Nocaster hum is gone :-)... Btw, those Nocaster pups can be really icepicking
  • Hey All
I'm really enjoying the thread as I finally had a good E bay guitar buying experience and picked up a fine 1985 Japanese Squire Tele with a flat toploader bridge.Best guitar I ever had! and after the new frets are done I want to do new pickups and shielding next. Anyway, I never really enjoyed pickup choosing. So many choices and then a commitment. But I was hoping Jim, that you could pass on any thoughts if you have any on the Joe Barden Danny Gatton pup's which I know run pretty quiet which is always nice. and also Danny Gatton pretty much seemed too have it going on in the tone department.
  • Another option for a not too piercing Tele-style pickup is a Broadcaster-style wound with 43 AWG pickup wire. I got a set from a winder named Travis Morris (only 120 for a set!), but I think most of the popular winders make a variant (Fender, Seymour Duncan, Lollar...). I think these *might* be even a little warmer/stable sounding, but my guitar body is a home-lacquered Thinline so comparison is almost impossible ... my set is close to 9k bridge, 7 neck. It's worth considering.
