How to practice melodic and harmonic minor scales?

edited March 2013 in General
Hi everybody--
My first post on this forum--so glad I stumbled onto it--hearing about your experiences with the lessons has been really helpful and encouraging. Much appreciated!
I've been working through the Arpeggios as Exercises lesson and it has inspired me to attempt to address some of the other gaping holes in my guitar knowledge--namely melodic minor and harmonic minor scales. Would anyone care to share some favorite approaches to learning and practicing these things? I've recently been reacquainting myself with the major scales in five positions (basically using the CAGED system, I think), but haven't yet ventured beyond them. Thanks!

  • I always start w 5th and 6 string root positions to get the sounds and overall feel down. Then I harmonize in triads and 7th chords. After that I just fool around and try to learn how to play the scale around some of my fav chord shapes. The two root positions and harmonizing it usually get it enough where I can sloppily use the scale, after that its just time. Come to think of it I should probably review this stuff myself...
  • That helps--I'll try to start playing around with the basic sounds this weekend--
    Thanks!
