princeton sounds

edited April 2013 in General
so ive been slowly working/having work done on a princeton i got a few months back and its finally coming together.

i recorded a few things using my iphone to give it a listen and critique the tone.

i didnt transcribe when you wish by Jim but listened to it so many times that it sounds pretty similar.
Alley cat was a song i remember from an arcade game as a kid but when i heard a recording of jim play it with adam levy I had to learn it.

  • Sounds great...Respect !

  • Nice, Corey. What did you do/have done to the amp?

Thanks! I started by putting groove tubes and a speaker from my friends bass amp in. After that it was still noisy and kinda lumpy sounding so I had some caps replaced, tubes biased and had the turret board re soddered. I also cleaned the pots. I did it piece meal to try to save $

I'm considering another speaker swap bc what I have in now is no name and doesn't sound great cranked.

This is the 4th tube amp I've owned (blues junior, Mesa blue angel and drz maz prior). I'm convinced I sound pretty much the same no matter what amp I use.

The princeton is great weight wise. I found myself not going out to play bc I didn't want to bring a 70 pound drz
  • That's so great Corey. You have a nice touch and your phrasing is delightfully relaxed on this one. You keep getting better and better!
  • Thanks! Alley cat is a lot of fun to play. I don't think I'd have the amp or the tune if it wasn't for your influence.

Very nice renditions! Really lovely stuff.

I have a 73 Princeton Reverb which had a replacement speaker when I got it a few years ago. I think it's a Ragin Cajun. I found that while I loved the overall tone, it wasn't quite loud and clear enough to keep up with my noisy rock band. I kept hunting around for other options...tried a DRRI, a Princeton non-verb and a few tweed combos. I always went back to my Princeton for the tone I heard in my head. In the end, my "problem" was solved by putting in a larger output transformer...sized more for a Deluxe Reverb. I now am getting tighter bass and more headroom than I had before. I mostly play rhythm guitar and sing so I wanted to achieve a little more of clean volume without maxing the amp volume. I turn it up pretty loud and ride the tele vol and tone.

It's a reversible mod, if that's a concern (and as long as you keep the parts) and it did the trick for me. I think the part I used is a Heyboer transformer...they are sold in a lot of places online.

I have enjoyed your stuff on Youtube as well!
  • Thanks for watching/listening!

The ragin Cajun has been brought up a lot in conversation w friends and tdpri so it is def on my radar.

Never thought about a transformer swap. I have no reservations about changing anything out on the amp so I will check out the cost.

I do however like having a little less volume. I jam w my buddy who plays drums in a lot of hardcore bands and I always try to get him to play brushes. W the princeton I have to tell him I can't get any louder, you will have to get softer!
  • Very nice renditions!! I love the Frisellistic loops in "When you wish upon a star" (DL4?)........
Where I can found good transcriptions of this greats songs?

    Saludos

  • I'm not sure if there's truly an increase in volume or if it's just a perceived increase due to later breakup. A lot of times a nice clean tone sounds louder to me than an overdriven tone anyway. It wasn't the volume so much for me as the headroom I was looking to increase. I think those larger OTs are for sale on the Allen Amplification website.
  • Sounds really good. Nice and free on Alley Cat and I think you have a good tone there!!!
  • Thanks for listening!
  • Awesome.

If I could add one more Fender amp to the stable, it'd be a SF Princeton Reverb. Good enough for Campilongo and Kenny Vaughan.

Unfortunately I don't feel like selling the Deluxe or Twin to swing that deal.

That's a nice sound Corey, congrats! I currently have the Princeton reissue. I have swapped all tubes to JJ's and the preamp to NOS amperex bugle boy's (what a difference). I kinda like the sound now.
