Any of y'all playing a MIM 50s Classic?

edited April 2013 in General
I love mine. Fat neck, low frets, resonant and woody sounding...one of the only solidbody guitars I've owned that I can play unplugged and feel the body vibrate against my belly. Mine's a 98 model, played it so much it's getting divots in the fingerboard.

I really believe that if the 50s came in a butterscotch finish, it'd torpedo the sales of the 52 RI.

Anybody else? Or just me?

  • I have the Esquire version, and I LOVE it!
  • I never much cared for the butterscotch myself. Looks quite fake on some 52RIs. Plus, I prefer white on white. The MIJ 52RIs with natural with blackguard look a lot better than the American 52RIs. So I prefer 58RI or MIM 50s look over the 52RI look. Also I love the 2 tone burst.

Then again, I played a few teles (China, MIM, USA), at a store this week through a Vibro Champ XD, and the Nocaster Relic and 64 reissue were the top ones. Although I dug the Classic vibe Squier 60s too (as I own one, feels like home). There were CS 60 and 61 models, one of which was a lot better to me than the other one. The Nocaster, to me, sounded most like Jim Campilongo tone, to me. The 52RI sounded like plastic next to it. There was no science involved, just me picking for fun. The only other time I've been at this particular store in Helsinki, Finland, was to see Campilongo, btw. :)

The MIM 50s bridge pickup I always find slightly lacking. Had a 98 model myself at one point, but the neck got crooked. Otherwise, a lovely guitar.
  • White 04 here. I've changed out the bridge and bridge pickup, and flipped the control plate. I love mine, but I wish it had a thicker, v=er neck. the neck pickup is incredible, though.
  • I've really liked all the MIM 50's Classics that I've played. If I were to get another Tele, that would probably be the one...or a Cabronita. But I already have a '72 Custom RI and a '69 Thinline RI and don't really NEED another Tele. I've been having serious Jazzmaster lust lately so I think that will come first.
  • It's great to latch onto a guitar that you know is gonna be a keeper. I don't see myself ever selling or trading mine...gonna keep it until it's an "old guitar"

I used to have that guitar for a while, before I sold it to get the american special. I didn't like the vintage frets, but a great guitar. The american special is super for me (modern radius, jumbo frets, vintage looking). Just the pickups aren't great, I hope to get a vintage set in the near future.

  • Fender is now offering the MIM Classic 50s in a nitro lacquer finish with a hardshell case, for about a c-note more than the old poly finish one. Haven't tried one yet, but my guess is that if everything else stayed the same spec-wise (except maybe for slightly improved pickups), these could be one of the best bang/buck ratios in recent Fender history...

That said, when I *finally* can afford another guitar, I'm thinking about rolling my own with MJT-finished wood. Something about their Candy Apple Green is calling to me!
  • People who still bad-mouth MIM Fenders need to spend some serious time with a MIM 50s Classic.
