Silverface Deluxe Reverb

edited June 2013 in General
Jim, I caught another show at the Falcon the other night. Great stuff as usual. I wondered for a minute where the Princeton was but when the band kicked in it was apparent your need for a little more wattage. I love the tone you were getting out of your SFDR and was curious what kind of 12 inch speaker you have in that amp. I own a late 70's Silverface and have been interested in trying some different speaker options.

Looking forward to a new album. You guys are doing some great things live and I hope that stuff ends up on your new record.

Stock everything, (not sure what year) Glad to hear it because the Living Room soundman kind of hates my SFDR.

For fear of sounding conceited, but I have to say ... Wow, what a great show that was! Josh Dion and Chris Morrissey are amazing, the sound at Marlboro is bright, yet "wooden" and we just played from the heart.

Thank you so much for being there-we really appreciate you! See you next month.

  • Jim, do you still have 6V6s in yours?

Yes -it's stock, but it has new replaced circuitry in the vibrato stage, most the caps etc have been replaced and it has $600 of new/old stock tubes. It's in absolutely perfect working order. I own about eight amps and it seems like I'm dropping one off for repairs every week.

All my amps are stock, except for the speaker variations (see link below) and one solid state rectifier in one of two Vibrolux's. Although amp talk has endless variables, I find the least discussed and most direct path to a good sound is to have amps serviced often. Fresh tubes, fresh speaker, good working parts, biased perfectly. This is costly - but to me, it's the most direct route to a quiet, powerful, great sounding amp.

Although I love connecting with the good folks in the guitar community - I find both amp and guitar pick up talk a little unfulfilling and sometimes frustrating due to subjective opinions in the context of writing. It's like trying to describe the taste of a cooked egg ... And it takes two seconds for me to know if I like an amp - if I can plug it in, and HEAR it.

But here's everything I know about amps...

    Thanks for the post -Jim
  • Jim, I thought you didn't like Deluxe Reverbs? Or is that just the Re-Issues?
  • I love Deluxe Reverbs but they are more suitable for larger rooms, and larger biceps - the reissues are not my dream amp, but Steve Cardenas and Jamie Fox love theirs, so who am I to say?
  • Oh, I know we're not talking absolutes here... everybody has their favorites. All good. I just remember a recent thread where you said you "didn't like 'em", so I was surprised to read about you using one, that's all. ok, I need to think less about gear and more about practice now... ;)

I so agree. I much prefer talking about performance, technique, theory, songwriting rather than endless discussions of guitars, amps, pickups, pedals, etc.

Although I agree -I think folks want speaker advice- and I DO have that...
