I went down the youtube rabbit-hole last night and came across this video series about Orrin Keepnews. These two are about Wes Montgomery. The whole series is really good so far. Basically stories about the artists he produced. I love listening to Wes. Depending on my mood when I listen to him I have one of three thoughts "I suck, might as well give up", "I suck but that's cool because I can accept that and enjoy Wes" or "I have so much work to do."

Thanks Adam, I really enjoyed these clips. I seem to gravitate back to Wes every few years and every time I do - I'm floored by his genius and technique.

Wes always seemed to find the musical core of whatever he played, trimming off the excess fat, getting down to the bone of musicality... and to me, his version of Round Midnight is the definitive version because it sounds so simple, and lonely...

I *think* Joe Pass said "the only innovative jazz guitarists of the 20th century were Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery"... while this statement invites debate, I can see his point...

Anyway, thanks again Adam, I always enjoy your posts.

Yeah, I'm the same way with Wes as well. I think it's because I'll obsessively listen to him for a month straight and then need to take a break. Same with Grant Green. I love Green's tone and his phrasing always surprises me. His ballads feel like he's on the edge of his seat and that it could dissolve any second. I love Green's version of Round Midnight as well. Both versions are so different but both are perfect for those 2am listening sessions.

Hi Adam,
A bit off-topic but if you dig Grant Green, you have to check out Peter Bernstein. Especially his CD's with Larry Goldings and Bill Stewart. Peter is just fantastic (like Jim!)

Thanks for the recommendation Sander. I picked up his "Monk" and "Earthtones" albums off eMusic and I'm really, really enjoying them. I love Monk and I'm really liking Peter's arrangements. And Peter's tone is really warm but has a nice edge to it.

I saw the Bernstein, Goldings and Stewart trio here in Vancouver at the JazzFest last Saturday. Absolutely inspiring. Thanks so much for the heads up on this guy! The whole band was phenomenal!
