Don Rich's / Campy's "Jingle Bells" Arrangement

edited October 2012 in General
Hi,
I've been looking into learning this for the holidays coming up (Old Toy Trains too), and was wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any major technical differences in Jim's approach compared to the Don Rich classic? Buck Owens original recording was in Eb, and supposedly Rich tuned a half step down. Jim's is in D, and I'm wondering if Jim tuned a whole step down, and played it the way Rich did (minus the obvious harmonic bends and such). There are a few Campy signature moves in his version, but to me the "Almost Christmas" rendition sounds pretty close to the original. However you look at it, a very nice tribute. If Jim or anyone would chime in, I'd appreciated it. Thank you.

They're very similar. I've transcribed the Jim version and although there's nothing especially difficult in it, stringing all the licks together is a bit of a challenge. There are a couple of places where there are behind the nut bends. It's a great cut.

This is how I play it.... with the fingerings that make most sense to me. It doubtlessly could be tweaked, so feedback is appreciated.
  • Kebwalk,
Thanks for posting the Jingle Bells transcription, it's great. The one change I might suggest is on the 3rd beat of the 3rd measure in the first melody. The "B" on the 9th fret on the D string could be changed to "Bb" on the 8th fret of the D string.

  • No problem. I was sweating an Xmas gig I have next week but thanks to you I have one more tune in the repertoire.
  • I just did a few songs last weekend with my kids. I enjoyed doing Jingle Bell Rock in E although it was slightly low for my voice. Here's our personal Christmas card link with 3 songs. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone! http://www.marinakchristmas.com

  • Okay, so I gave it a blast. Super fun to play. Just did a shortened version... as my mate Sam Bell (amazing guitarist - check him out on youtube) was recording it & didn't want to waste too much of his time.
