While a looper isn't required, I would say that some kind of recording device will certainly allow more learning from the lesson. That could be anything...a looper, cheap PC or Mac recording software etc. Even a cell phone or an old school tape recorder would work. You don't need awesome recordings of the rhythm tracks, but you'll learn a lot more from the lessons if you do have it. And I actually learn a little more from having to record a rhythm track. And as Jim says, it makes it more fun. Again, it doesn't need to be fancy or expensive.
I don't have a looper, but I think I'll pick up that simple TC ditto one. looks pretty good for about one benjamin.
I just picked up the Chet Lesson. I like to just listen to the whole thing (while I'm at work) a couple times through before I even go at it. I LAUGHED at the end when Jim talks about "nail length" saying he doesn;t go for the "super long creepy dracula nails".
I ended up getting a Ditto X2. I figured a looper would allow me to practice playing over chord changes as well as allow me to sit back and critique my playing. I got the X2 partly for the extra features and partly for the larger size. Since I don't have a pedalboard anymore, I figured the bigger size would be more stable.

In a word, no. But it's fun to play over the rhythm part and improvise etc.
