Wedding gig - need a song suggestion

edited March 2014 in Root
Not your typical wedding. It won't be in a church, and it's a young couple who is trying to keep things light, and kind of hip (not sure why I'm getting the invite). I'll enlist a buddy of mine to play acoustic, and I may play a mix of acoustic and electric. This will be instrumental background music for about an hour before the wedding (some Dead, Band, Little Willies???) and I'm thinking of throwing in one or two traditional songs.

I know Jim's Over The Rainbow version, and I'd like something else in that vein that's not too hard.
This seems like a good excuse to buy another of his lessons so if anyone out there knows another type of chord melody tune that I could learn without too trouble, I'd appreciate it! My first idea was When You Wish Upon a Star, although Jim's version is a bit on the sad side. Thanks!

I'd suggest "Georgia", "My Funny Valentine", Blackbird" or Barcelona (it's easy but folks seem to like it) . Don't forget, you need not get mired down in lush chording- if you learn and play the single note melody to let's say "Spanish Eyes", or something recognizable and appropriate- you'll be doing the job and then some!

  • When You Wish is a great lesson. It can be played more upbeat as well depending on your phrasing. A couple other ideas: Tennessee Waltz and Stella are very approachable, yet they sound lovely.
  • Thanks Jim and JMH, I'll definitely consider these suggestions. I've been overcomplicating it in my mind, thinking I need to be playing at the "jazz guitar guy" level, since it's a wedding!
  • By the way, I was just perusing youtube for some versions of Spanish Eyes. Didn't realize Wayne was such a bad@ss on guitar!

Now, I wouldn't have to grow a mustache for this gig would I?

  • I'd throw Sleepwalk into the mix of suggestions. Great tune, great lesson, and appropriate for the gig.
