Honeyfingers- Luca Benedetti

edited June 2014 in Root
My friends Honeyfingers are all great players who deserve to be enjoyed - and since this is a guitar oriented site I thought I'd showcase Luca Benedetti - a great Tele player who is carrying many torches, among them the great Jimmy Bryant and Leon Rhodes.

Here's a clip. More to come!

JONNY LAM STEEL GUITAR - LUCA BENEDETTI GUITAR- ROY WILLIAMS GUITAR- DAVID SPERANZA BASS - FIDDLE UNKNOWN TO ME.... SORRY!

  • I for one, am very glad that those torches are being carried. Hats off to Luca for doing Leon Rhodes. Those Texas Troubadour instrumentals are fantastic. I hear Leon still performs regularly at the Ernest Tubb Record Store in Nashville. Wouldn't mind seeing that.
  • Besides being a killer guitar player, Luca is one heck of a nice guy!
  • Aaron - Luca is an inspiration musically - and by character.
  • I happen to send Luca an email, about a month ago. Got curious about what amp he was playing in that long youtube video of you guys playing. What started as a quick quick question, turned into around a dozen emails about vintage amps, pickups, guitars & tone. Looking forward to more recordings of Honeyfingers, and I really hope you guys put something out from the studio. You and Honeyfingers seem like such a great fit. The Ten Gallon Cats are great, but there is something more when I listen to you play with Honeyfingers, can't put my finger on what it is though.
  • +1 to that! I also love the 10GC, just as much as JC's "solo" stuff... Honeyfingers is in a different realm to me (different, not better or worse- all are fantastic!) HF sounds ..."vintage".... like I'm listening to a radio broadcast from the 50's. Love love love it, and it's the style I have been working on for the last year or so....

And I didn't even know HF had a web page!

  • Jim and honeyfingers in my opinion is one of the wonderful musical gifts to the NYC music scene. as vintage as it sounds it still seems fresh and edgy... love it .. So Aaron- whats the scoop on Luca's amp? what a great combo him on a vintage tweed and Jim on a vintage silverface...
  • Wow. Thanks Jim and fellow Campi-fans! (Aaron, nice to see you here and thanks again for the nice words)

I for one, having followed and been a huge fan of Jim's playing and compositions for years prior to meeting him, can't say enough about how inspiring it has been getting to not only play with him but also to know him as a close friend and mentor. So right back at you Jim!

Gear wise, for that show, was my custom ordered MJT tele (spec'd to be like a '53) straight into my '59 Harvard.

    Cheers,

    Luca

p.s. here's a bunch of videos of Honeyfingers playing with Jim!

Luca- Good to read your gracious post. Thank you brother!

Can you ~one more time~ talk about that incredible Fender tremolo amp you play through? If I'm not asking too much of your time...

    speaker?
    wattage?
    photo?

That amp has the greatest tremolo I've ever heard. Mostly, tremolo/vibrato on my amplifiers is underwhelming. My understanding is the electronics on a vibro-champ is different then other Fender amps. Hence- the great tremolo/vibrato!

In my experience- these are noteworthy, if not stand out tremolo/vibrato amps...

2nd place - those light brown fender amps from the 80's? I think this is one (see below) ...'63 Vibroverb Reissue

3rd place - Again, the Vibro-Champ - but of course, with a mic!

  • Jim, that would be the aptly named, Fender Tremolux. Mine is from 1959 - the later, 5G9 circuit. A real winner of an amp and def one of the best tremolos I've heard. It's a bias modulated tremolo and prob about 18watts. It's basically a mini-Bassman. Speaker wise, they usually came with alnico P12Q's but mine came with a ripped P12R (1959) which has since been reconed. While I was waiting for that one to be reconed I put in a all original 1959 P12N and it sounds splendid. Little louder and with tighter bass.

Dave Hunter, the ultimate gear geek, has a great summary of the amp here...

and even in more detail and with more pics here...(thank you Dave and Google Books for the free preview!)

  • wow killer thread- keep it up boys.. wealth of info. i recently picked on a silver face vibrochamp from the early 70's blown away by the trem. perfect... wish it would go a bit louder so i can use if with the guys i jam without it breaking up but nonetheless love it a lower volumes. any recommendations for reverb pedals that would complement the vibrochamp? currently i am using a holygrail nano which is cool but different from a trad fender reverb. thanks guys
  • Thank you Mr Benedetti!
  • great thread Jim, and fantastic videos of course. Luca, great to see you here and always a treat to see you live (this is Eric btw, "tahcofan"). I had been curious about Luca's rig, but honestly know so little about the differences in teles and tweed amps that I really didnt even know what to ask. Tremolux sounds about right though, I am a little familliar with that one, and Luca's is the tweedy creme for sure! I imagine this forum is a much better venue to discuss than in between sets at a show, so thank you. sorry to be late to this party but have been a little slammed recently, and when it comes to videos I cannot view or contribute from my office. So anyway, it has been quite the treat to see Luca and Jim perform together. Luca's tele is the super twang! Jim's has that "boing." Together it is just the overload, in a very good way. here's a few great shots of the fingers:

Brilliant. these videos just made me late for work, but well worth it.

some fire breathing picking all over Folsom
  • Awesome to hear what speaker you've got, or had in your Tremolux Luca. I recently came into a (pretty much) NOS 1959 Jensen P12N speaker. Pulled it from an Organ that had it in it's Leslie cabinet. The Organ just sat in someone's house since they bought it in the early 60's, rarely used! Now I need to get an amp to put it in.

    The endless chase...
