Ida Lupino, Carla Bley

edited September 2014 in Root
Certain songs come and go over the course of time only to reemerge sometime later for no apparent reason. I've always loved Carla Bley's music. Her humor, her arranging skills, her ability to bring very diverse musicians together, are just the start of a long list of her wonderful musicianship. I hadn't heard Ida Lupino for quite some time, but began to re-listen to it again last week. There are a number of versions recorded; she originally wrote it for Paul Bley's trio in the late 50's (I think) and he's recorded several times since, once in duet with Gary Burton. John Scofield also recorded a nice version on an early EP. The most famous recording is probably on her album "Dinner Music," which is just generally marvelous (it might be the kind of thing that you like, if you like that kind of thing).

I've started to noodle around with it from a lead sheet (from Carla Bley's site). I've attached it here. After listening to it a lot and beginning to play through it a bit, I've come to think that Jim could really do wonders with this tune. So I'm going to try and plant a seed...

*Well, for some reason I cannot seem to upload the lead sheet PDF, but if you follow the link you should be able to see it: Ida Lupino Lead Sheet link
