Alana - Live

edited November 2014 in Root
I mentioned Alana in a previous post, but I thought it might be good to start a new thread on this. It's one of my favorites from Dream Dictionary. I haven't seen a version of this live on youtube until today. Finally! Here it is:

It's a good version. There's a lot of Jim playing around the beat; more so than the studio version. It sounds much more like a work in progress, but very alive, very beautiful. I don't know his backing musicians that well. It's not Josh on drums. The bass is electric, not upright. There isn't a performance date in the description.

The poster on youtube (John Leon) has the rest of the show (not in a playlist) and it's a good one (although they all seem to be good shows!). He also has a ton of Marc Ribot if anyone's interested.

Anyone know of any other good live versions of this song? I'd like to hear more of its progression up to the studio version.

  • Thanks for the video. This is new for me too. Yes, I agree - it's a beautiful song. For me, that's exactly what sets Jim apart: his songwriting, which, for me, doesn't get as much as attention as it should.

I believe the drummer in the video is Tony Mason. I assume this must be around 2012.
  • I also finally found a live version of Huckleberry. Enjoy!

And I found someone that did a nice cover of it:
  • Thank you for posting the Alana video. That song is one of my favorites from Dream Dictionary as well.
