Comments
Julian Bream - John Williams "Together"
Jimi Hendrix Experience "Winterland" Box Set - if you think you've heard enough "bootleg" Hendrix- you haven't! Noel, Mitch and Jimi give amazing performances of great songs (not released to death like "Red House") with an outstanding sound quality
Nels Cline & Julian Lage "Room" Cryptogramophone 2014 (my vote for my favorite release in 2014)
Red Simpson "Truck Drivin Fool"
Sergio Abreu Eduardo Abreu "The Guitars of Sergio and Eduardo Abreu" - The LP released on the "Ace of Diamonds" label, not to be confused with the totally different "Columbia" release of the same name
Cream "Wheels of Fire"
Agustin Maruri "The Andres Segovia Album Original Compositions"
Federico Mompou "Mompou- Complete Piano Works"
Dick Nolan "Truck Driving Man" (this is a rare bird)
Miles Davis "On the Corner"
Alexandre Lagoya "The Spanish Guitar"
Ramones "Rocket to Russia"
Charles Mingus "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady"
For new TO ME albums that I listened to alot (not released in 2014)
Bill Frisell - Solos (he's from another planet lol)
Guthrie Trapp - Pick Peace (really, SUPER HIGHLY recommended!)
Charlie Christian- Live At Minton's (required listening)
George Barnes - Country Jazz (required listening)
Jimmy Bryant - Country Cabin Jazz (required listening)
Samantha Fish - Black Wind Howlin' (I'm a blues guy too)
Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways (I used to be a rock guy, not much NEW rock left these days)
Cousin Harley (Paul Pigat) - B'Hiki Bop (kind of a jazzy/chet-y/rockabilly instrumental album- fantastic!)
and, most definitely JC... "Orange" is my all-time favorite, but this year I also listed to alot of Live at DuNord and both the 10 Gallon Cats albums.
Johnny Smith - The Man with the Blue Guitar
Johnny Paycheck - The Real Mr. Heartache The Little Darlin' Years
Garoto - Garoto Revive em Alta Fidelidade Ary Barroso
Tom Jobim - Matita Perê
Clifford Brown - Clifford Brown with Strings
Milton Mascimento - Minas
Lee Konitz - Motion
Tony Scherr - Twist in the Wind
Buddy Emmons - Emmons Guitar Inc. (The Black Album)
Julie London - Julie is her Name
Baden Powell - 27 Horas De Estúdio
Complete Billie Holiday Lester Young 1937-1946
Duke Levine - Beneath the Blue
Jim Campilongo Trio - Dream Dictionary
Paris Monster - It Once Had Been Kind
Nélson cavaquinho - Nélson cavaquinho (1973)
And, Jim- I'm going to have to try to give Hendrix a "serious" listen... I can't explain it, but Hendrix has never really "spoken" to me, for some reason. I don't deny that what he did, when he did it, was revolutionary, but for some reason, I've only ever heard Jimi as "kinda' cool", and have never really experienced (no pun intended), his genius. But I feel that alot of times, we "discover" stuff when we are READY to discover it... when we can actually process it, or something.... perhaps I am finally "ready" for Jimi?
Released in 2014:
Gary Clark Jr. - Live
Selwyn Birchwood - Don't Call No Ambulance
Jim Campilongo Trio - Dream Dictionary
Not released in 2014, but I listened to these a lot during the past year:
Mike Zito and the Wheel - Gone to Texas
Otis Spann (and Fleetwood Mac) - Biggest Thing Since Colossus
The Little Willies - For the Good Times
Los Lobos - By the Light of the Moon
Otis Redding - Best of
John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers - Blues Breakers (the Beano album)
Steve Earle - El Corazon
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - In the Beginning
The Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East
Bob Dylan - No Direction Home
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Box Set (the instrumental version of Bold As Love is incredible)
I don't buy much new music these days but the two albums I bought that were released in 2014 were Marc Ford's Holy Ghost, and Puss N Boots No Fools No Fun. The nice thing about discovering Jim's music is exploring the music and artists connected to him. I'm pretty impressed not only by the singing on this Puss N Boots album, but Norah deserves credit for her guitar playing. Definitely not the easiest thing to be out there as the sole guitarist in a small trio.
And it may not count, but the youtube Honeyfingers clips were streamed many times this year onto my living room TV.
Season's greetings, Szabi
Jim Soloway / Bare Handed: very nice solo guitar
The Winery Dogs / self titled: killer playing from Kotzen and Sheehan. Get the 'Special Edition' with the live tracks...
The Civil Wars / self titled: great tunes, great vocals, great instrumentation
Nick Drake / Bryter Layter: great tunes from what, 1970 or so? Still holds up today.
Pink Floyd / The Endless River: hey, it's Floyd...
Eric Johnson & Mike Stern / Eclectic: EJ showing his jazz side, plus a nice intro to Stern for me.
I've been digging into the original versions of various jazz standards lately too... Peggy Sue for Fly Me To the Moon, Ruth Etting for All of Me, etc. good stuff.
And new to me: Almost Christmas by JC! Very cool album!
While I only picked up "Pick Peace" a few weeks ago, I think it's going to be one of my most-listened to albums of 2015. Alot to hear, alot to absorb.
Here's a short movie made by GregV (another unbelievable player; check out his "Tailgate Troubador" album... it's not exclusively tele, and it's quite "produced".... he calls his music "soundscapes", or "soundtracks without the movie"... alot of great playing).... it's Guthrie Trapp's bio:

From 2014 I liked the Vince Gill + Paul Franklin album "Bakersfield." Covers of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. I had never heard of Paul Franklin (pedal steel), but I sure know who he is now.
Rich Robinson also put out a fantastic album last year.
