Past is Looking Brighter - Leslie?

edited July 2015 in Root
Jim, not sure why I didn't catch this in the past, but this weekend while listening to Dream Dictionary I caught a Leslie sound in the background of "The Past is Looking Brighter." Was that you're playing or did you have a backup guitarist? Also, was it a real Leslie, or a pedal? And obvious question, if it was a pedal, which one? Thanks!

  • I don't mean to answer for Jim, but I got "busted" asking this question once.... Jim doesn't use a leslie, or a leslie pedal, to my knowledge. He gets that amazing chorusing effect (or, if you will, slow-speed leslie), by bending the neck. No joke. I've never heard anyone do it as beautifully as Jim, and I have found it a very difficult technique to learn.
  • Here's a video "lesson" by a guy who interview JC once, he asked about the technique, and has tried to learn it and demonstrate it:

  • Hmmm, I'm definitely hearing a leslie in the background of this song. It's no where near the sound of bending the neck.

Hi guys- I overdubbed that "Leslie part" and played through an actual Leslie speaker. Producer Andy Tommasi suggested it and truth be told- at first I didn't want to do it! Mainly due to wasting time on a unsuccessful overdub playing though a Leslie years ago. But I love that part and it adds a lot. I demonstrate that part on the "Past is Looking..." Lesson By Mail. It's really simple but the Leslie makes it special. But it's not the "neck bend" Justin so aptly demonstrates.
  • Cool. It sounded too good to be a Leslie pedal I thought, which is why if it was a pedal I needed to know what it was :) Glad Andy talked you into recording with the Leslie, it's subtle but a great addition to the song.

Thanks, may have to pick up the Past is Looking Brighter lesson next.
  • Damn!! I got burned again!!! LOL

  • I hadn't noticed the Leslie effect until you guys mentioned it. And, ruger, thank you for posting that clip from Justin. I can't wait to get home and try that technique out.
