used or new teles under1500$

I sent this message to jim today,he suggested I post my question here:

we've never met I don't think but ,I've always enjoyed your work..I wanted to ask ,since you are a tele guy,which one do you prefer of the newer ones (I can't afford the wack prices of the older ones-I had a 66' stolen from me a few years ago and never replaced it)
1500 or less is what I'm looking at to spend ..straight tele,fat neck,blonde,heavyweight.

I did recently play a nice blonde,large necked 'roadworn' model but was put off by that fact that it was made in mexico.

    if u liked it, why should it matter that it was made in mexico? roadworns and bajas are top notch teles if you ask me...

    I have a 52 AVRI that is good. Its not my go to guitar but I practice with it every day. I just ordered some new pickups for it though the originals sound great. My only qualm is it has small frets, but I have grown to like them, they let you slide things around and little easier but I dont bend all that much so it may bother some.

    Its not a full Nitro finish, it has some coats of Poly, but it sounds better to me than some of the other U.S. Fenders. I agree with Alex too, if you like the Mexican, who cares where its from

    I have a 62 wildwood thin skin tele.
    there american made,have 9.5"radius fretboards,taller frets,and custom shop p/u
    for around $1,500.best deal out there,IMO

    A $1500 budget will afford you any number of good options. If it were me (and it's worth noting I am reasonably handy), I would look into building a "partscaster" from the finest materials available- USA Custon Guitars, Rutters, etc- or look into a custom build from Creston, Ron Kirn, Rick Kelly, Hahn, or especially Seuf's (no affiliation other than I know Dave Seuferling, he's a really good guy and his work is GREAT), etc. That said, I wouldn't be scared off by MIMs- my Baja is great! For that money, one could easily pick up a good used MIM like a Baja, road worn or classic, maybe make a couple of upgrades, and have about enough left over for a Princeton reissue...

    Some good choices in here, although I'm not sure you'll find a hahn at that price point. You might look for a used K-line or Grosh as well as a new G&L. I have a 2005 fender american standard that i upgraded the pickups and bridge saddles on that I have less than $800 invested in and it's a keeper. Also the 62 custom, thin skin AVRI from Fender is probably my favorite under 2k, but they are hard to find.

    I wish I could afford a Custom Shop Tele - I'll keep playing the lottery. In the meantime, I picked up a Danocaster from Dan Strain in Nashville. It's slightly more than $1500, but absolutely gives those CS Teles a run for the money. This model is a '55 Whiteguard with a big soft-C neck that is just impeccable.
